The Meaning Behind the Name
Watchmen can be traced back to biblical times. God told his people to choose one man from among them to serve as a watchman, to blow the horn and warn the people of the land should they come under attack (Ezekiel 33). In 18th century England, all towns were required to establish a watch and householders were periodically obliged to perform this duty. They were charged with guarding the gates and patrolling the streets at night.
Law enforcement in colonial America was similar to the early English watch, making it a community responsibility. Groups of volunteer householders were responsible for guarding the town against fire, crime and disorder. Over time, the responsibility for law enforcement in America shifted from volunteers to paid police forces. Today, men and women across the country continue to serve their communities by keeping watch and guarding against crime and disorder.
